Project Cronos Details Reveal Sony’s Plans For Robust PS5 Cloud Streaming Service

Details on Sony’s new streaming architecture for PS5, Project Cronos, have been revealed in a new report on Insider Gaming.

According to the report, the aim of Project Cronos is to establish a PS5 streaming experience that is not only robust but will also serve as a major push forward for Sony in the ever-expanding streaming market.

The format holder reportedly started working on Project Cronos around five years ago due to the complexity of the PS5 SSD. Under the Future Technology Group, Sony designed a new network storage solution based on PCIe (NTB), leveraging NTB and the PS5 I/O co-processors.

Sony reportedly has a total of 28 data centres across 15 metros for the rollout of the PS5 Cloud streaming service, which is planned to launch in FY23 (April 2023 — March 2024).

Earlier this week Sony started rolling out the beta for PS5 cloud streaming to select users, which reportedly features support for up to 4K resolution
