Project Morpheus is ‘not another PS Move,’ says Sony

The president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios (SCE WWS) has admitted the format holder struggled creating a defining experience with PlayStation Move.

Speaking with Gamasutra, Shuhei Yoshida made it clear that the company’s upcoming virtual reality headset, Project Morpheus, won’t suffer a similar fate to its motion-sensing cousin.

We struggled to use the capabilities of Move to create a real 3D playspace, and convert that into good game design,” said Yoshida. Ultimately, he admits that “designing games for regular TV using 3D input is really difficult."

"Trying to make good games for Move was hard," he continued, adding that Sony failed to emulate the success of Nintendo’s motion-control gaming as “the beauty of Wii was, anywhere you go, any direction you look, you can still play! It’s fail-safe, and great for everyone.”

For Morpheus, Yoshida-san said Sony is pushing for developers to create full-blown experiences for the device: We are confident people can use it for hours and be happy, if the game is designed well,” he said.

Project Morpheus is due to ship in the first half of 2016, with Sony committed to offering as low a price point as possible for the headset. A wireless version, however, is not on the cards.
