PS Plus not required for MLB 14 The Show roster updates, non-multiplayer online features

During a press preview earlier this week, MLB 14 The Show game designer Ramone Russell confirmed to PSU that PlayStation Plus will not be required to enjoy non-multiplayer online functionality in this season’s baseball sim.

When asked if PS Plus would be required for roster updates, Russell replied, "Nope, you get all that for free. All your roster updates, all your sliders, all of the vaults are accessible without a PlayStation Plus account."

Good news for the roughly half of PS4 owners who aren’t Plus subscribers, but the service continues to demonstrate its value. This month alone, North American subscribers are getting Outlast on PS4; Metro: Last Light, Remember Me, and PayDay 2 on PS3; and ModNation Racers: Road Trip and Street Fighter x Tekken on PS Vita. In Europe, subscribers can enjoy BioShock Infinite and Dynasty Warriors Next in place of Street Fighter x Tekken and PayDay 2.

Other MLB 14 The Show news from Sony’s event include San Diego Studio’s new focus on trimming gameplay fat that formerly caused single games to take up to one hour. While players can still enjoy a lengthy simulation experience, three new features–Player Lock, Quick Counts, and cutting moments without commentary–can potentially bring an hour-long game down to innings that take only a minute or two.
