Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter reckons PlayStation Vita’s chances of success are slim, labelling the device ‘too hardcore’ in a market dominated by smartphones and 3DS.
Speaking with GameTrailers, the analyst painted a pretty grim future for Sony’s high-powered handheld.
“Sure there will be the occasional game, but the market’s dominated by smartphones, 3DS, Vita’s too hardcore,” said Pachter. “Sony will try to revitalize Vita, but it’ll fall flat.”
He went on to dismiss Sony’s plans to make PS Vita a companion device to the PlayStation 4, suggesting that gamers “just buy an extra controller” for multiplay kicks, before calling the device a "gimmick."
“Nobody cares about playing the Vita on train,” declared Pachter.
PS Vita was conspicuously lacking in terms of major reveals at Sony’s E3 press event on Tuesday evening, with much of the focus going to PS4. The Walking Dead was announced for PS Vita, as well as handheld versions of Flower, the God of War Collection and more, but that’s about it.
Still, one has to wonder where those PS Vita iterations of triple-A franchises are, such as Grand Theft Auto, Gran Turismo, God of War, Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid. Perhaps Sony is saving its big guns for Gamescom or TGS?
