The PS2 has been revealed as the first video game console to be added to Japan’s Future Technology Heritage registry.
The list was originally started in 2008 and is maintained by the National Museum of Nature and Science, and features more than 380 items which were manufactured in Japan that “have had a significant impact on the state of people’s lives, economy, society and culture.”
Some of the items included in the list are the VHS, Sony Walkman, the first LCD calculator, PC-9801 computer, the first CD player and DVD, and the CD-R format.
The PS2 is number 365 in the registry and is one of 18 new additions to make the list in 2024, and made the list as “its beautiful graphics were on par with those of arcade game consoles at the time, and allowed for realistic expressions.”

Furthermore, the PS2’s built-in DVD player ensured the console was “important as a product that realised practical use of multimedia,” helping to popularise the format and coming in at a lower cost than most standard DVD players of the time.
The PS2 launched in 2000 and went on to become the most successful video game console of all time, moving around 160 million units and was still popular even after the PS3 arrived on the scene.
