PS3 holiday sales up 76%, 3.8 million units sold

Sony had a remarkable 2009 holiday season, with sales of the PlayStation 3 up by 76% compared to the previous year. Between the last week of November 2009 and the end of the year, Sony sold more than 3.8 million PS3s worldwide, signifying the highest record sales for PS3 hardware for a holiday season.

The announcement came in a late press release today from Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., which also said there are now some 38 million registered PSN accounts worldwide.

The increase in sales come from the lower priced PS3 slim, and a host of big titles like Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Assassin’s Creed II, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II. We can expect other big releases this year with God of War 3, Gran Turismo 5, MAG, Heavy Rain, and ModNation Racers.

The press release also mentions that the new motion controller and 3D capabilities will help tap into a wider audience.
