PS3 Q2 sales up year-on-year

Sony Corp’s announced that PlayStation 3 sales increased during the firm’s second quarter ended September 30, resulting in a significant turn in profit and increased revenue for the hardware manufacturer’s Networked Products and Services division.

Sales of the flagship gaming console during the three-month period reached 3.5 million units (up from 3.2 million in 2009) while software sales topped 35.3 million units – up from last year’s 23.9 million.

Meanwhile, operating income for the division clocked in at 6.9 billion yen (£53.7m GBP), while overall sales increased by five percent year-on-year to 369.1 billion yen (£2.9 billion GBP), which Sony attributes to increased sales of PC and PS3 hardware.

"Categories which favourably impacted the change in segment operating results (excluding restructuring charges) include the game business, reflecting the strong performance of PS3 resulting from significant hardware cost reductions and higher sales, and PCs, resulting from the increase in sales as mentioned above,” the corporation said in a statement.
