The PS3 turns 20 in November this year, but that hasn’t stopped Sony from keeping the console ticking away with more firmware updates, and sure enough, you can now download PS3 system software update 4.93.
At this point in the PS3’s lifecycle there aren’t any new features being added (Sony stopped adding this sort of thing years ago, unsurprisingly) so the patch notes won’t be a shock to anyone. But for the record, here’s what PS3 firmware 4.93 does:
- This system software update improves system performance.
Sony launched the PS3 in November 2006 in the US and Japan, although the UK would have to wait until Spring 2007 to get its hands on the system. The console was notorious for its high launch price and tricky architecture, making development for third-party studios a bit of a hassle thanks to the Cell processor. Due to its aforementioned technical innards, PS3 games are not backwards compatible with PS4 or PS5, although if you’re a PS Plus Premium member you can stream a select amount of games included in the subscription.
