PS3 to win current hardware cycle, says analyst

Strategy Analytics analyst David Mercer has stated his belief that Sony will ultimately triumph in the on going console war between PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii.

Speaking in a report titled “Taming the Waves: Games Console Life Cycles and Platform Competition," Mercer believes that Wii sales will peak next year, while Sony’s platform will continue to prosper for another five years, with lifetime sales predicted at around 127 million units globally.

"Nintendo has done a great job with the Wii in bringing console games to new audiences," he commented. "But its sales are now falling, particularly in mature markets, and its installed base will peak in 2011. Ownership of both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 will hit their highest points between 2012 and 2014."

PS3 launched in November 2006 and has a worldwide user base of approximately 33.5 million unit as of December 2009.
