PS3 tops 400K units in June NPD figures

According to NPD figures, Sony sold 405,488 PlayStation 3 units during the month of June, thanks in large part to a little game called Metal Gear Solid 4.

Speaking of MGS4, the title rested comfortably at the top of the NPD software chart, shifting a whopping 774,600 units this month (not including copies bundled with PS3 hardware). The other PlayStation title on the list was the PS2 version of LEGO Indiana Jones at the number 10 spot, which sold approximately 260,300 units.

As for other PlayStation hardware, the PSP shifted 337K whilst the PS2 moved a respectable 188K. Just for some perspective, the Xbox 360 sold 219K while the Wii and DS pushed a whopping 666K and 783K respectively.

"The PlayStation brand is truly hitting its stride on its long-term opportunity across all three platforms. Our strong June numbers serve as proof to the continued momentum of the PS3 and affirms that we’re exactly where we expected to be," read the official Sony response. "This month’s success can be attributed to the exclusive blockbuster Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and we’re poised for continued growth into the back half of the year with a much anticipated line-up, including LittleBigPlanet, SOCOM: Confrontation, Resistance 2, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, and NBA ’09: The Inside. Additionally, the new PlayStation Network video delivery service will be a big driver for the PS3 and PSP, allowing consumers to extend their multi-media and entertainment experience."
