PS4 and Xbox One combined sales now at 60 million, says EA

Combined global sales of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have reached an estimated 60 million units, the chief financial officer for Electronic Arts has said.

Speaking at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media, and Telecom Conference this week (via GameSpot), Blake Jorgensen brought up the figure when discussing virtual reality, specifically in relation to why his company hasn’t yet jumped on that particular bandwagon.

The executive said that in order for EA to spend in the region of $50-100 million on a full-blown VR title, the market for that technology would have to expand to the level of current-generation formats, which it estimates stands at around 60 million. It’s also worth noting that just a few months ago EA put the global user base for PS4 and Xbox One at around 55 million.

The publishing giant also added that the install base for last-generation formats (PS3 and Xbox One, in other words) has reached over 150 million worldwide. Jorgensen went on to confirm that around 25 percent of all EA game sales come from digital downloads, up from 20 percent in November 2015.

Sony announced earlier this year that global PS4 sales stand at around 35.9 million, although Microsoft has yet to reveal any official sales figure for its flagship home console.

Sony has a major year ahead for the PS4, with the likes of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Ratchet & Clank, No Man’s Sky, The Last Guardian and more due for release.
