The NPD Group has confirmed that PlayStation 4 was the best-selling console in the U.S. during the month of January 2017, beating Xbox One in the process.

PS4 vs Xbox One – Sony gets off to strong start for 2017

In addition to topping the hardware charts for the first month of the year, Sony confirmed that four of the five best-selling games for January 2017 were for the PS4. That’s not to say Microsoft didn’t have its own reasons to celebrate either; the format holder revealed it had the best January sales for the Xbox One since its launch in November 2013.

Last month saw the release of a number of major titles for the PS4, including exclusives such as Yakuza 0, Kingdom Hearts 2.8: Final Chapter Prologue, and Gravity Rush 2, plus third-party titles including Resident Evil 7: biohazard. Unlike Microsoft however, Sony noted that it did not achieve hardware growth year-on-year.

PS4 sales still outpacing the PS2

Sony confirmed last month that the PS4 has now sold through over 53.4 million units worldwide following its launch in November 2013. The console is performing so strongly at retail that it is actually tracking ahead of the PS2, which to date is Sony’s best-selling home console with over 150 million units sold globally. Last year saw the launch of some key hardware from Sony, including the PS4 Slim, PS4 Pro, and PSVR.

PS4 system software update 4.50 is currently in its beta testing period and will launch soon, complete with a number of new features such as external storage support.
