Renato Fragale, the Gaming Client PC Business Lead for technology giant AMD, has revealed on LinkedIn that the PS4 helped the company avoid going bankrupt.
Sony’s last-generation console launched in November 2013 and utilised a customs AMD chip, and the system was obviously a huge success with over 117 million PS4s sold worldwide — all powered by AMD’s technology. However, analysts predicted years ago that the company would go bankrupt by 2020; AMD reported in 2015 that revenue had declined by 15% due to the shrinking PC market, so things weren’t looking too hot at the time.

However, as Fragale writes on his LinkedIn profile, AMD was spared this fate thanks to the success of the PS4.

It’s also worth noting that the Xbox One from Microsoft also looked to AMD to provide some much-needed technical punch for under the hood, as it was powered by a custom AMD SoC. The Xbox One also sold millions of units around the globe, a while not as successful as the PS4, their combined success must have been very significant for AMD.
