Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Worldwide Studios, has said that the console maker is committed to helping its indie games scene to ensure a healthy influx of titles in between major first-party launches on PlayStation 4.
Speaking in the latest issue Famitsu magazine (via Polygon), Yoshida-san observed that indie titles are key to buoying the software line-up for its new console, as they don’t take as long to produce as big-budget offerings.
Both PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 were notorious for suffering major software lulls following the release of major third and first-party titles – something which Sony obviously wants to avoid with its next-generation system.
“That’s why we’re trying to give our help out to indie titles,” said Yoshida-san. “Huge titles from large makers take time to develop; they can’t just be brought out immediately. However, with the indie scene, especially in the West, we’re seeing really neat games coming out from there pretty much every week.
“I’d like to get that indie flow going in the Japan market as well, with unique titles coming out one after the other. More and more users are making digital purchases these days, so even studios making games with small teams can make it into the business.”
PS4 is due for release in North America on November 15 and arrives in Europe on November 29, priced $399/£349, respectively.
How do you feel about the upcoming indie scene on PS4? Are you excited to see what smaller studios have up their sleeves? Have you enjoyed the indie offerings so far on PS Vita and PS3?
