The director behind the highly anticipated A Way Out has suggested that PlayStation 4 isn’t quite as powerful as we’d like to believe.
Speaking during an interview with Engadget, Josef Fares said that Sony’s current-generation console is comparable to that of a five-year-old PC in terms of technical grunt. His comments also seem to imply that consoles are holding back developers as a whole.
"You want the honest truth? This machine is not so strong as you think," said Fares, while pointing at the PS4 running A Way Out. "This is like a five-year-old PC. If consoles were as powerful as PCs are today, you would see all different games. Most of the work developers put out there is to make them work on consoles."
Both the PS4 and Xbox One are turning four-years-old this November, although Sony and Microsoft have improved versions of their respective consoles available in the shape of PS4 Pro and Xbox One S, respectively. Furthermore, the Xbox One X, a high-end version of Microsoft’s flagship games machine, will roll into stores this fall, offering 4K resolution gaming and other performance enhancements.

Despite this, the console has not been without its controversy since its E3 unveiling last week. For starters, Microsoft said it does not consider the PS4 Pro a competitor to the upcoming system, but rather the Xbox One S—despite the fact the latter does not offer 4K gaming, only video. In addition, it has been reported that the new machine also employs the same checkerboard rendering wizardry that the PS4 Pro utilises, bringing into question Microsoft’s marketing of the console as a true 4K powerhouse.
As for Fare’s comments, it’s not uncommon for PCs to quickly catch up and surpass the latest gaming hardware after just a few years, seeing as how fast upgrades are available for home computers. Don’t expect Sony to drop the price of PS4 Pro anytime soon, either.
