PS4 Pro advert channels 80s nostalgia to sell ‘Sony’s most powerful console’

Sony has launched a nostalgia-fused PlayStation 4 Pro trailer to drum up hype for its mid-cycle refresh ahead of the console’s launch next month.

The trailer channels 80s marketing with its bombastic, ‘surfer dude’ lingo and retro special effects. In addition, it also recalls some of Sony’s early PlayStation commercials back in the mid-90s, introducing the PS4 Pro as its most powerful games machine to date.

PS4 Pro release date set for November 2016

Sony announced the PS4 Pro during its PlayStation Meeting in New York City back in September, where it also confirmed the existence of the previously outed PS4 Slim. While not designed to kick start a new hardware generation, the PS4 Pro specs confirm that the system has more muscle under the hood than its regular counterpart, allowing for 4K gaming and increased frame rates.

A number of games have already been confirmed to support PS4 Pro, including the upcoming Final Fantasy 15, Resident Evil 7: biohazard, Titanfall 2, and Horizon: Zero Dawn. Furthermore, a free update released by Sony means players can enjoy the likes of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and The Last of Us with HDR capabilities.

PS4 Pro is scheduled for release on November 10, 2016 priced at $399/£349. The console will be going head-to-head with the Xbox Scorpio, although Microsoft’s system won’t be released for another year yet. Interestingly, it has been reported that the Xbox Scorpio will be more powerful than the PS4 Pro, and will feature support for Blu-ray 4K.
