Sony has announced that it expects to sell 20 million PlayStation 4 consoles during the financial year ended March 31, 2017.
The hardware giant said this represents an increase of 8.3 percent in overall sales in comparison to the previous year. Sony attributes the rise to the performance of PS4 software and hardware unit sales, including those made over the PlayStation Network.
It’s worth noting that the 20 million that Sony expects to sell during this period will bring life-to-date sales of PS4 to 60 million, as the console is currently sitting at 40 million units shipped.
Sony launched the PS4 back in November 2013 alongside Microsoft’s Xbox One. The system quickly pulled ahead of its leading competitor, although Microsoft has neglected to confirm just how many consoles it has shifted.
However, Capcom’s own internal estimates have combined sales of both machines at around 55 million units globally.
The PS3 was released in November 2006 and amassed around 80 million sales by the time its successor hit stores.
Sony is gearing up for the next chapter in the PS4’s lifecycle with the launch of PlayStation VR this October, and rumors are also circulating that it is working on an upgraded device known as the PS4K, aka ‘Neo.’
