Security fixes applied to the system software
The PS4 was released in November 2013 in the US and Europe, with the Japanese release arriving in early 2014. While the console didn’t reach the commercial heights of the PS2, it comfortably outsold the PS3, which was something of a difficult generation for Sony due to the losses sustained during the system’s launch period. The PS4 received a mid-cycle refresh in the form of the PS4 Pro, and a number of its games have been remastered for the PS5 with extra bells and whistles (The Last of Us, The Last of Us Part 2, Days Gone among the highlights).
Sony is still supporting the PS4 with its free PS Plus Essential range each month, but the format holder has announced that in January 2026 PS5 will become the focus of its monthly freebies, with PS4 games being only offered ‘occasionally.’
