Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg has touched on the console battle between PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, stating the format holder is content with where its flagship system is right now despite falling behind its competitor in terms of raw sales.
Speaking with Engadget, Greenberg doffed his cap to Sony’s own successes so far this generation, although made it clear that both companies are innovating in their own ways going forward.
“Sony’s had a lot of success as well,” said the executive “I think what you’re seeing is that the console market is really healthy, console sales are doing really well in general, software sales are strong. It’s been a good industry for both of us, and we’re innovating in different ways. We’re innovating in a way where we know a lot of gamers are multi-device gamers, they don’t just buy one system, and so we want to be able to have the same types of experiences on Xbox Live, the same games, the same friends, both in the living room on their console or at work, on vacation or at school on their PC. You should be able to stay connected, and play the same games through things like Play Anywhere. That’s really been where we’ve been focused on.”
PS4 vs Xbox One: Sony leads current-gen hardware punch-up
Both PS4 and Xbox One were released in November 2013, although Sony’s console quickly pulled ahead in global sales. To date, the PS4 has shipped over 40 million units worldwide, although Microsoft has remained coy on just how many systems Xbox One has moved.
Sony has a slew of major titles launching later this year, including Gran Turismo Sport and The Last Guardian. In addition, the console maker is also moving into virtual reality gaming with the launch on PlayStation VR in October 2016.
Microsoft and Sony are also busy chiselling away on new hardware, with the Big M confirming the release of the Xbox Scorpio for holiday 2017, while Sony’s working on the PS4 Neo, although that’s currently without a release date.
