Sony has won another bout in the on-going PS4 vs Xbox One console battle in the United States, with the NPD Group confirming overnight that PS4 managed to outsell its lead rival during the month of March 2017.
This latest victory makes it five consecutive months that Sony’s machine has beaten the Xbox One in monthly sales in the U.S., although it’s worth noting that March’s victory did not belong to the PS4 console maker; instead, Nintendo Switch was the overall winner, with over 900,000 units shifted following its launch early last month.
In fact, the Switch was such a resounding success that it has become Nintendo’s fastest-selling console to date. Unsurprisingly, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild also performed well, selling 925,000 copies during the same period.
The PS4 also had a solid month in terms of content however, with Horizon: Dawn Zero being one of the biggest exclusives of the year so far. Developed by Guerrilla Games, the critically acclaimed open-world action-RPG shifted over 2.6 million copies worldwide after just two weeks on the market. The game was also the biggest-selling title on the PlayStation Store last month.
Sony and Microsoft’s current-generation systems both launched in the U.S. and Europe in November 2013, although PS4 quickly pulled ahead in sales. Sony announced earlier this year that its flagship gaming console has moved 53.4 million units worldwide, and in late 2016 rolled out fresh hardware in the shape of the PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro.
Things look set to heat up a notch later this year however, with Microsoft launching its mid-cycle juggernaut, the Xbox Scorpio. Find out how Sony’s most powerful system measures up to its impending rival in our PS4 Pro vs Xbox Scorpio comparison article.
