YouTube channel HDTVTest has put the PS5 4K Blu-ray drive up against the Xbox Series X’s version, and the results are pretty conclusion: Sony‘s console offers a better experience than Microsoft’s latest home console in regards to 4K Blu-ray playback.
The comparison test goes into a lot of detail, revealing a number of interesting advantages for PS5 users. For starters, there’s higher chroma bandwidth on Sony’s new home console, with the PS5 rendering gradations smoother than the Xbox Series X 4K Blu-ray player.
Elsewhere, PS5 outputs at 12bit YCBCR444, while the Xbox Series X offers 10bit RGB. In addition, Microsoft’s console skips a couple of frames when skipping ahead or behind, and is known to mishandle pure 24 FPS Blu-rays.
The PS5 and Xbox Series X/S were both release in November 2020 within a few weeks of each other, although it’s become increasingly difficult to get hold of any of the consoles due to stock shortages.
