PS5 Is Getting PlayStation Tournaments Feature This Year

Sony plans to release a PS5 version of the PlayStation Tournaments service later this year, Jim Ryan said during the format holder’s presentation at CES 2022 this week.

Ryan was discussing a variety of topics during his presentation, including the features that arrived for PS5 during its first year on the market, “such as 3D audio on TV speakers and SharePlay between PS5 and PS4.” He then added that “we’re also planning to introduce a new Tournaments feature on PS5.”

The original incarnation of PlayStation Tournaments was announced for the PS4 in 2016, and is a collaborative effort with ESL, a eSports organiser. Players could enter into a competition format for specific titles, with various prizes up for grabs.

Sony filed a patent for ‘Online Tournament Integration’ for the PS5 last Summer, allowing the PSN to generate tournament brackets without the need for a game to implement competitive functionality as standard.
