PS5 Reaches 65 Million Shipments Worldwide As Sony Looks To Focus On Single-Player, Live Service Games

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced during its latest financial results overnight that it has shipped 65 million PS5s worldwide since the console’s inception in November 2020.

The format holder recorded a 12% increase in sales for its Game and Network Services division for the three-month period ended September 30, 2024. This was in part attributed due to the strong sales of third-party titles, and mentioned “a new sports title,” which is probably EA Sports 25 and “an action RPG title from China,” which is almost certainly Black Myth: Wukong.

PS5 shipped 3.8 million units during the three-mont period, which was down 29% year-on-year, bringing life-to-date shipments to 65.5 million. This puts the console a few million units behind the PS4 during the same period of its lifecycle. Looking ahead, Sony plans to focus on single-player and live service products.

We intend to build on an optimum title portfolio during the current mid-range plan period, that combines single-player games, which are our strength and which have a higher predictability of becoming hits due to our proven IP, with live service games that pursue upside, while taking on a certain amount of risk upon release.

Sony launched the PS5 Pro yesterday, which is a high-end version of the standard version of the console that uses an AI upscaling technique known as PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR).
