Ampere Analysis has revealed in a newly-published document that a $1,000 price tag for the PS6 and new Xbox could see sales decline nearly 40% in comparison to previous generation hardware.
In a statement the firm claimed that a “conventionally designed, incrementally improved next-generation console” released in 2028 for around $1,000 would see a decline of 38% over the first five years, taking into consideration combined sales of PS6 and the Xbox Helix. The company further added that we can expect a large decrease in industry spending as a whole, with overall sales estimated to be 12% lower than if the new systems released at $700.
Sony hasn’t publicly announced the PS6 yet, and earlier this week the company’s CEO stated during an interview with the Wall Street Journal that it has yet to decide on a release date for the new console. The system has long been tipped by insiders to launch in 2027, but with the memory shortage crisis ongoing – not to mention Sony’s plans to stop production of PlayStation game discs – it is now believed we won’t see the PS6 until 2028.
Earlier this year, hardware tipster Kepler_L2 stated that the Bill of Materials for the PS6 has increased to nearly $1,000, having previously stated that the console cost Sony around $760 to manufacture, leading to a likely RRP of $699.99. However, the leaker noted that costs would only increase further if the format holder decided to delay the machine beyond 2027.
