Hardware leaker Kepler_L2 has suggested that a $600 price point for the long-rumoured PS6 handheld system is unlikely to happen.
Speaking in response to a user on NeoGAF who asked if the device could be $600, as well as the situation on the prices of LPDDR5X, the tipster commented: “$600 is definitely not possible right now. LPDDR memory is actually seeing the biggest price increases since it’s being used in a lot of data center products. RAM prices fluctuate a lot right now, and I don’t know how good of a contract Sony managed to get, so it’s hard to say, but they are most likely selling at/near cost.”
Sony has yet to officially announce the PS6 but the company’s CEO recently stated that it hasn’t decided on a release date for any future hardware. However, an analyst firm has stated that Sony’s plans to stop production of physical game discs in January 2028 ‘almost guarantees‘ that the PS6 will not launch until 2028 at the earliest.
Kepler_L2 has long claimed that Sony’s next-generation console will launch in late 2027, with manufacturing set to begin next summer. However, they recently stated that Bill of Materials for the PS6 has now jumped up to nearly $1,000. In regards to the rumoured handheld device, last year it was stated by an Xbox insider on NeoGAF that a “full-blown PS handheld is coming” and is expected to launch around the same time as the PS6.
Kepler_L2 meanwhile stated that the device will use shader binary compatibility, allowing PS5 titles to be played without developers having to implement any changes.
