PSN down on Christmas day in suspected DDoS attack, leaving thousands offline

Update – The latest news as of 22.20pm GMT is that Sony is still investigating. There is no estimate as to when PSN will be back online at this moment.

If you were hoping to log into the PlayStation Network today, you may be disappointed. It appears the PSN is currently down, and hacking team, Lizard Squad, who has been responsible for numerous DDoS attacks on the network in recent months, has claimed credit.

The group has taken to Twitter to own up to the unwelcome Christmas surprise which has left thousands of gamers frustrated worldwide and unable to play PlayStation games that require an online connection.

A DDoS attack causes a temporary overload of the servers which brings the network crashing down. PlayStation’s latest statement asks users to keep an eye on the official blog for further updates.
