Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has stated his belief that Sony needs to ensure the PSP2 is priced below that of Apple’s iPod Touch, believing the firm may risk destroying the PSP brand otherwise.
Pachter’s comments come following a discussion on PSPgo with IndustryGamers, where he described the platform’s price point as having ‘killed’ the handheld at retail.
"I think that the PSPgo is a fine device," he said. "But the price point has absolutely killed it."
"If Sony takes it and makes it more expensive with multiple cameras, I think that they will destroy the brand."
As such, Pachter feels PSP2 needs to be priced no higher than $199 in order to have a shot at raking in the punters: “The PSP2 has to be priced at $199 or lower to have a real shot. If it has a Cell processor, that price point isn’t likely.”
Apparently, PSP2 will feature a touch-screen and quad-core CPU, which doesn’t sound too rosy for folks hoping for a low price point. Still, we’ll have to wait and see what Sony has up its sleeve.
