Q2 PS3 sales up 86% from last year

The last few weekly hardware sales charts have been a tad depressing for fans of PlayStation 3, but be not afeared- it seems the console is still doing rather well on the whole.

Sony has just announced that sales of the PS3 for the financial period July to September have risen 86 per cent from last year -2.43 million as opposed to 1.31 million units. The PlayStation Portable has also made strides, selling 3.18 million units during the period as against 2.58 million units last year.

We suspect the Q3 report may not be quite so rosey, with the PS3 slipping below 10,000 weekly sales in Japan and facing sturdy competition elsewhere from the recently re-priced Xbox 360. Sony will be looking to its upcoming roster of big exclusives – LittleBigPlanet, Home and Resistance 2 in particular – to revitalise the console’s once-healthy fortunes.
