In a tragic accident today, Colin McRae, world famous rally racer, beloved husband, and loving father of two, has died, along with three others, including his son, a close friend, and one other child.
The accident occurred while Colin McRae was piloting his helicopter in Jerviswood, Lanarkshire, half a mile from the family’s home and burst into flames just after 4pm. There is no official statement yet as to the reason for the crash, as McRae is said to be an excellent pilot, and the weather not being too harsh.
Colin leaves behind his wife, who had formerly been his co-driver earlier on in his career, his daughter, and a legacy. McRae became Britain’s first World Rally champion in 1995. He was one of the country’s most successful sportsmen, achieving 25 wins in World Rally events and 42 podium places.
McRae became so well known that he has been the basis for several racing games, including the most recent, Dirt, which is out on the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It is up in the air at this point what his death will do to the series. This early on though, we encourage all of our readers to keep his family on their thoughts as they struggle through this terrible loss.
