Hiroyuki Kotani News Patapon PS4 PS5 Ratatan

Ratatan Is The Spiritual Successor To Patapon From Creator Hiroyuki Kotani

Patapon creator Hiroyuki Kotani has announced at BitSummit in Japan over the weekend that a successor to the much-loved PlayStation rhythm game is in the works — say hello to Ratatan.

In development for as-yet unconfirmed platforms, the new project features music by Kemmei Adachi, who provided the score for the original Patapon, and is launching on Kickstarter on July 31, 2023.

While a true sequel has yet to materialise, creator Kotani-san has revealed during an interview with VGC that he isn’t ruling out collaboration with Sony in the future.

Patapon was a really unique experience at the time of its release and reflected the development environment of that era. We wanted to make another game like that for the modern age.

There’s a possibility of maybe doing a Patapon sequel in the future, but for this we really wanted to make our own game, in our own style, with specific types of gameplay that reflect what we want. After that, if there’s a chance to speak to Sony about doing a Patapon sequel then we’ll go from there.

Patapon was originally released for the PSP in 2007 and was followed by two sequels, with the first two entries given a fresh coat of paint for PS4 with a 4K remastering.
