Red Dead Redemption 2 versus GTA 5 sales

Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick has said that Red Dead Redemption 2 sales are unlikely to match those of the critically acclaimed Grand Theft Auto 5.

Speaking during an interview with GI.biz, Zelnick said that the publishing giant is not going to measure Red Dead 2’s success in context with how favorably it compares to GTA 5’s sales. And it’s worth remembering the open-world action-adventure title has sold a mammoth 80 million units since its launch in 2013.

The reason, in my opinion, why GTA V has sold 80m units, and GTA Online had another record year 3-and-a-half years since its release, is because it stands alone in the generation,” said the executive.

In every prior generation, there have been other titles that have clustered around GTA from a quality point-of-view,” he continued. “That’s clearly not the case now. If you are over 17 and you have a new generation console, you have GTA. Otherwise we wouldn’t have shipped 80m units. Can any other title achieve that? It seems unlikely. Do we have incredibly high hopes for Red Dead? We do. But we are not putting it in the context of GTA.”

Red Dead Redemption 2 release delayed to 2018

Rockstar’s highly anticipated Wild West title was originally due to ship for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in fall 2017. However, the developer confirmed earlier this year that it had decided to push the game into spring 2018, though Take-Two reckons the delay won’t matter in the grand scheme of things.

Not a great deal is known about Red Dead Redemption 2 at present, although it looks like we’ll be getting multiple playable characters and an emotionally-driven narrative. Rockstar has also promised an expansive online component similar to what the company achieved with Grand Theft Auto Online.
