The creative director of competitive multiplayer game, Rematch, has revealed that developer SloClap never considered making the game free-to-play, noting the most important thing is to “make a very good game.”
Speaking with PCGamer, Pierre Tarno revealed that “I never considered free-to-play” despite expectations, which may originate from Rematch being “an online game with a competitive edge [so] it should be free to play, otherwise it’s dead on arrival.”
However, Tarno added that “one of the things I love about making games is that there is no secret formula or anything, but the best way — or maybe the only way — to make a commercial success is just to make a very good game.”

Rematch was released for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S on June 19, 2025.
