Remedy has offered a brief update on the Max Payne 1 & 2 Remake during a Q&A following its latest earnings call, confirming the project is still in the pipeline but noted Rockstar is taking care of publishing duties.
“There’s a lot of questions concerning Max Payne; on that game, Rockstar Games is handling the publishing side, so we can’t comment on those questions,” commented Aapo Kilpinen, Investor Relations Manager at Remedy. So, from the sounds of it, Rockstar will be the ones to divulge any further info on the Max Payne 1 & 2 Remake.
Remedy last issued an update on the remakes for the first two Max Payne titles around this time last year, when the studio confirmed that the project “continues to progress and remains in full production.” Prior to that, the company said in April 2025 had advanced to “major development stages,” and earlier in the year confirmed Max Payne 1 & 2 Remake was making steady progress.
Development of the Max Payne 1 & 2 Remake project started in the second quarter of 2024, just months after James McCaffrey, the voice actor behind the character, had passed away at the age of 65 after losing his battle with cancer.
The original Max Payne was released in July 2001 for the PC and later arrived on PS2 and and Xbox in December the same year. The game follows Payne, a former New York Police Department detective, as he attempts to uncover the details surrounding his family’s murder while looking into Valkyr, a mysterious designer drug.
The game is noted for its extensive use of bullet time, which was popularised by The Matrix a few years prior to the game’s release. Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne followed in 2003 for PC, PS2, and Xbox, with Payne now back with the NYPD while wrestling with his past demons.
