Resident Evil 2 Remake update confirms sad news for Leon fans
Voice actor Matt Mercer has confirmed he won’t be reprising his role as Leon S. Kennedy in the upcoming Resident Evil 2 Remake.
The news comes following reports from Alyson Court last week that she won’t be voicing Claire in the highly anticipated survival horror title, as a result of Capcom deciding not to hire non-union actors for the project. Indeed, this appears to be the same case with Mercer, who confirmed as much on his Twitter account.
While not the original voice actor behind the rookie cop (that honor goes to Paul Haddad, who was then replaced by Paul Mercier), Mercer has been lending his talents to Leon’s character for years now, starting with 2012’s Resident Evil 6. He then reprised the role for the CG flicks Resident Evil Damnation and this year’s Resident Evil Vendetta.
Resident Evil 2 Remake was announced in August 2015 following Capcom’s decision to shut down a fellow fan project by the name of Resident Evil 2 Reborn. No platforms have been announced for the title as of yet, although it’s very likely to see a cross-platform release on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One. Capcom noted that the game is a full-blown remake of the seminal 1998 horror classic, and not just a spruced up remaster.
While a Resident Evil 2 Remake release date continues to remain elusive, Capcom has hinted that the game may be out sooner than we expected. The team is also acutely aware of fan expectations for the project, and has said that it’s striving to capture the feel of the original game.
Resident Evil 2 was originally released on the PlayStation and later ported to PC, Nintendo 64, and Nintendo GameCube. The game was the best-selling entry in the venerable franchise until the release of Resident Evil 5 in 2009, and a firm favorite among fans, who often list it alongside Resident Evil 4 as the greatest game in the series overall. The story picks up a few months after the first Resi, and sees Leon and Claire attempting to escape a zombie-infested Raccoon City while uncovering the sinister Umbrella Corporation’s latest evil doings.
Stay tuned for more Resident Evil 2 remake news as we get it.
