The chaps at ShiguWorks have cobbled together a playable demo of their planned remake of Resident Evil 4’s spooky-looking beta.
Known colloquially as Resident Evil 3.5 among fans, the beta was showcased during E3 2003 and featured Leon S. Kennedy creeping around a castle-like setting, while experiencing hallucinations and battling against a mysterious ‘hookman’ enemy. Creator Shinji Mikami promised the game would make us ‘pee our pants,’ although for whatever reason the game was scrapped and revamped into the Resident Evil 4 we know and love today.

However, while footage of the beta has surfaced over the years, it’s never been made playable—until now (sort of). ShiguWorks has confirmed it is aiming to develop a complete fan remake for Resident Evil 3.5, and the demo is now available to download. There’s a teaser trailer below to see how it’s shaping up.
Of course, fan remakes don’t have a great track record when it comes to Resident Evil. A planned modern remake of Resident Evil 2 was shuttered by Capcom back in 2015, although at least we’re getting an official remake of the game in its place. In other words, we advise you to check this out while you can, as it may suffer the same fate as that project.
“I have a full story drafted that is intended to psuedo-canonically fit into the RE canon with almost the exact same intended story premises of 3.5, whilst pulling some curveballs that keep it from conflicting with future RE titles. As for Leon’s VA, we already have our own great voice actor doing Leon’s voice work for this very demo as I write this,” said the project lead.
“As for the future of the project, it will only live on if it garners enough public support, and if we can find a capable level designer + a few other staff members to help bring it to completion. If all goes well, we do plan to take it to completion.”
In the meantime, look out for Resident Evil 7: biohazard on January 24, 2017 for PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One.
