Resident Evil 5 named Capcom’s best-selling title ever

Capcom has announced that Resident Evil 5 has surpassed iconic brawler Street Fighter II as the company’s best-selling title of all time.

The publisher and developer revealed the news on its Investor Relations website, confirming the 2009 action-horror sequel has sold 6.5 million copies to date. SFII by comparison has moved 6.3 million units.

SFII was originally released in 1992, and received a number of re-releases, including its inclusion on the Capcom Classics Colletion Vol.1 for PlayStation 2 and Xbox.

Third place on Capcom’s list goes to Resident Evil 6 with 5.2 million copies sold, followed by classic Survival Horror title Resident Evil 2 with 4.96 million units. RE2 was released in 1998 and was ported to numerous platforms since, including Nintendo 64, Dreamcast and GameCube.

Meanwhile, Monster Hunter Freedom 3 has moved 4.8 million copies, Street Fighter II Turbo is at 4.1 million, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite at 3.6 million and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis with 3.5 million units sold.

Bringing up the rear is Street Fighter IV with 3.3 million copies sold and Monster Hunter 4 with 2.8 million units.
