Resident Evil 7: Beginning Hour received a much-anticipated update during the Tokyo Game Show this past week, with Capcom also unveiling a brand new trailer for the upcoming survival horror sequel to whet our appetites ahead of the game’s January 2017 release.
However, the main attraction for many gamers is of course the new Twilight update for the Resident Evil 7 demo, which adds some new content into the mix. Okay, so it probably presents more questions than answers, but still, it’s worth checking out and seeing what’s on offer; no doubt Capcom intends to expand the demo more with a future update.
We’ve outlined all the changes to the demo below, from cosmetic additions to new items and more. Oh, and yes, there’s now a use (sort of) for that notoriously daft dummy finger! Before you do that however, be sure to look at our Resident Evil 7 demo ending guide.
Resident Evil 7 walkthrough – Step into the Twilight

New Room
Easily the most substantial addition to the Twilight update, Capcom has introduced a brand new room to explore in the farm house’s attic. Specifically, it is located in the same room as where you answer the phone; go there in the usual manner, and you’ll see a section of the wall has been smashed down, granting you access next door. There’s a fair few things to find in here, which we’ve detailed individually below. The room itself is pretty non-descript, aside from the inclusion of chairs lodged incongruously on the ceiling of all places. Aside from a manky-looking bed, mannequins, and some boxes, it’s about as dingy and innocuous as you’d expect from an attic.
Basement Key
The Resident Evil 7 demo now includes a new key item in the shape of the Basement Key. As is the case with any object you pick up, you can examine the key in your inventory, although this doesn’t really yield any useful info. Sadly, that’s about all you can do with the key, as there’s currently no way to use it to unlock the basement, which remains inaccessible at present.
Resident Evil 7 dummy finger
Nestled in the corner of the new attic room by a bunch of discarded TVs is a lump of celluloid; this object is later revealed to be part of a dummy’s hand. And what do hands have? Fingers! Yes, finally, you can at last do something with the dummy finger that has been perplexing players ever since the Resident Evil 7 demo launched back in June. Well, that’s stretching it a bit, but you can at least combine the two items together to form a dummy hand, complete with index finger that is able to ‘point’ in a direction when you examine it. That’s about all there is to see right now, although no doubt Capcom will give us more to do with this mysterious object in a future update.
Handgun Ammo
While you can’t locate any firearms in the demo, you can acquire two boxes of handgun ammunition: one is located in one of the crates on the left-hand side of the room as you enter, while the other is underneath the bed. Perhaps we’re nostalgic for old-school Resident Evil, but discovering the ammo really pulled at our survival horror strings; there’s nothing quite like scouting out a new area and finding valuable objects, and everyone knows just how rare ammo is in Resident Evil (or it used to be).
What’s the message on the wall?
Near where you located the celluloid object is a bloody message scribbled on the wall, which reads: “Five guests murdered, but where is unknown. Nothing to point to their final gravestones.” Could it be possible to discover the resting place for some of the Bakers’ victims in the future?
Can I open the locked window?
Once again, this is located in the newly-unveiled attic room. Head up the small ladder you find here, and it’ll bring you to a locked window which, upon examination, reveals that it appears to lead back outside. Sadly, you’re unable to unlock the window and escape the spooky old house, but it’s an intriguing discovery nonetheless. Perhaps a future update will finally allow us to leave without getting Welcome to the Family’d by Mr. Baker?
Family Snapshot
This is located downstairs at your starting point. As you may recall, the fireplace has a portrait of the Bakers above it, only this time, it’s been changed to depict a shot of Jack flanked by two young children. Presumably, one of them is Lucas, the ‘bad seed’ mentioned by Andre in the VHS segment of the demo. The other? Who knows, although we’d like to put a small amount of money on it being the mysterious ‘ghost girl’ who has been popping up.
What’s behind the door?
Remember that locked door to the right of the hall as you exit the living room? Well, that’s received something of a grisly makeover, with mold (or something equally as disturbing) forming all around the door frame. Once again, you can’t open it, although it is possible to hear some mysterious sounds emanating from the other side. Creepy.
Quick Turn
Much like the classic Resident Evil titles, it is now possible to do a quick 180 degree turn. You can perform this simply by hitting down + X.
Resident Evil 7 New Phone Ending
Remember the mysterious woman who calls you on the phone in the attic? Well, she now has a new message for you to listen to. We won’t spoil it here for you, but suffice to say, it seems to imply that there’s more to come from Beginning Hour.
Resident Evil 7 is due out on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One on January 24, 2017. You can download the Resident Evil 7 demo now.
