Capcom’s Masachika Kawata has shed light on the Japanese game maker’s vision for Resident Evil 7: biohazard as a soft reboot for the survival horror series, likening it to what Modern Warfare did for the Call of Duty franchise.
Speaking with OPM UK, Kawata-san, who serves as Resident Evil 7’s producer, noted that while Modern Warfare was something of a refresh for the Activision juggernaut, it didn’t completely eschew the series’ foundations in terms of core gameplay. As such, this is exactly what Resi 7 is aiming for.

“In terms of how we envisioned Resident Evil VII, it’s almost like Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. COD4 wasn’t a complete reboot. It still stayed true to the franchise and what the franchise meant, but at the same time it allowed the series to grow in different directions and expand its horizons. That was the process that we took with REVII.”
Resident Evil 7 is scheduled for release on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One on January 24, 2017. Don’t forget that PlayStation VR users can play through the whole game to experience things with a whole new level of immersion—if you’re brave enough, that is.
