Koshi Nakanishi, the director on Resident Evil Requiem, has revealed that part of the reason why the upcoming survival horror title has an optional third-person view is because Resident Evil 7: Biohazard was just a bit too scary for some players in its first-person view.
Speaking with GamesRadar, Nakanishi-san, who also directed Resident Evil 7, said that while he introduced the first-person view to accentuate the horror factor, it may have been a bit too much for some players to handle. As such, Resident Evil Requiem offers a third-person view option in addition to the first-person viewpoint
Looking back at Resident Evil 7’s first person perspective, I implemented that as a way to make it more immersive and more scary than ever before, which I think most you know media and players agreed it was an incredibly scary game, but it was possibly too scary.

I think some people couldn’t handle it, and either couldn’t finish or didn’t even start it. And that’s something that I look back on thinking that, you know, I want to make sure that people can enjoy this game. So if you started the game off in first person perspective, and you’re finding it’s too much, then third person is almost a way to step slightly back from that level of horror and make it slightly easier to deal with by having the character on screen as a kind of Avatar of yourself.
Resident Evil Requiem is slated for release in February 2026 for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S. The game takes place around 30 years after the destruction of Raccoon City, and follows FBI agent Grace Ashcroft as she investigates a series of deaths a hotel – the same place her mother, Alyssa, was murdered some years before.
