Roblox Will Start Letting Game Makers Sell Their Games For Real Money

Roblox announced a number of changes coming to how it operates during its Roblox Developers Conference (RDC 2024), with the most significant perhaps being that those who make games on the platform will be able to sell their games for real money.

The way it’s worked so far is that if you wanted to sell your game for more than “free” on Roblox, then players would purchase it with the in-game premium currency, Robux.

That’s changing, beginning with PC players, but according to a report from CNBC the intention is to eventually include the feature wherever Roblox is available.

Roblox will of course still be taking a cut of these sales, with the exact amount varying depending on the price of the game being sold. If it’s $50, then the game maker takes home 70%, if the game is $30, then the game maker takes home 60%, and if it’s $10 then the game maker gets 50%.

On the face of it this seems like it’ll be a great new revision of Roblox’s model to allow creators to earn more. The company has been criticized heavily with allegations that it is not compensating creators properly, and is making money off what is essentially child labour.

However it remains to be seen how games costing up to $50 will perform on a platform where almost everything is free-to-play.

Still, Roblox hopes that this new opportunity for creators will stir up a desire for some of them to do “something more grandiose” with their games.

The other big change is that creators will be able to have physical merchandise sold in their games. Beginning with Shopify and then eventually more e-commerce platforms, creators selling physical goods can sell them within their games.

Which is a change that could potentially have a greater impact on how much creators on the platform can earn.
