The PS5 version of Grand Theft Auto V is being offered as a free upgrade to anyone who owns the digital version of the game on PS4, Rockstar has announced.
Beginning tomorrow, those who own any PS4 version or the digital Xbox One version of Grand Theft Auto V will be able to upgrade to the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S versions at no additional cost, and experience the best versions of GTAV and GTA Online ahead of the launch of The Kortz Center Heist. GTAV and GTA Online on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S feature vast technical improvements, easy migration of your Story Mode and Online progress, and new features including Hao’s Special Works high-performance vehicles and upgrades, Career Progress rewards, and much more.
Take-Two announced last month that GTA V has sold a staggering 230 million copies worldwide since its launch in September 2013. Yes, in case you forgot, the game has been made available on three generations of hardware; it originally released for PS3 and Xbox 360, with a PS4 and Xbox One launching a year later. The PC version edition arrived in 2025, and finally, the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S version was released in March 2022.
Grand Theft Auto V follows three protagonists – Franklin, Michael, and Trevor – as they plan a series of lucrative and increasingly complex number of heists, with players able to switch between each character at any point during free roam periods. Naturally, the game is packed to the rafters with side quests and other activities for players to take on, in what is (until GTA VI, that is) the biggest open-world in the franchise to date.
