Rockstar North has applied for an extension to its trademark filing for the PlayStation 3-exclusive espionage romp, Agent.
While this on the surface would suggest that things are in motion for a possible revival of the project—after all, it was announced way back at E3 2009 before vanishing into oblivion—it’s worth noting that Rockstar does the same thing every year with the trademark.
For a long time Agent was lumped alongside Final Fantasy Versus XIII and The Last Guardian as one of the many examples of video game vaporware. Sadly, it’s all on its lonesome now, as those titles are very much alive and coming in 2016 (or in Versus XIII’s case, revamped as FFXV).
Could Rockstar’s Agent be revived for PS4?
Agent was announced as a PS3-exclusive deal between Rockstar and Sony during the company’s E3 2009 press conference, although that’s about all we got on the game in seven years.
Sadly, Sony was not exactly forthcoming on new details in the years following its announcement. Former Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) boss Jack Tretton couldn’t comment on the game’s status during an interview with GameTrailers back in 2012, for example.
Given the lack of third-party exclusive titles in this day and age, it is very unlikely that Agent would be a PS4-exclusive if the title (and that’s a big if) is brought back from the abyss.
Despite the game’s apparent death, hope was rekindled back in 2013 when a Rockstar employee cited the game as one of the in-development projects he was working on at the time.
