Rumor: Bayonetta 2 cancelled

SEGA was purportedly working on a follow-up to its sultry actioner Bayonetta before shelving the project after an internal restructure, reports Spong.

According to sources close to the website, the sequel would have included a brand new character, supposedly of a U.S. military background.

SEGA last month confirmed that it had cancelled a number of in-development titles, though didn’t divulge any specifics. Whether or not Bayonetta 2 was one of these casualties remains unknown, but it would certainly tie in with the above report.

Bayonetta developer Platinum Games has touched on the subject of a sequel numerous times on Twitter. Creator Hideki Kamiya told followers “She’ll be back if you believe so,” and responded “I believe so” when quizzed if there would be a sequel.

Similarly, Platinum Games bigwig Atsushi Inaba revealed to Eurogamer a while back that while there isn’t a concrete plan in position as far as Bayonetta goes, the series is “definitely a special IP for us.”

Bayonetta was released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in January 2010. Check out our review here.
