Rumor: Fallout 3 HD re-release inbound for PS4 and Xbox One

Bethesda may be looking to re-release 2008’s Fallout 3 as a high-definition remaster for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Speculation of a possible HD version of the post-apocalyptic RPG kicked off after it emerged the publisher tried to unban Fallout 3 in Germany.

That’s according to IGN Germany, which reports that Bethesda "initiated a difficult and rarely-successful trial" with the Federal Department for Media Harmful to Minors (BPjM) to lift Fallout 3’s ban three years prior to the end of its statutory ten-year sentence.

“In the case of Fallout 3 the request for de-listing was granted even though only seven years passed since the game was banned," a statement from the BPjM reads. "The Big Council decided at its meeting on February, 4th that Fallout 3 will be removed from the list because its content is no longer classified as harmful to minors from today’s perspective."

Bethesda has fueled hope that an announcement for Fallout 3 HD is imminent, telling IGN: “We cannot give a statement at the moment, but will answer your questions in a couple of weeks."

Fallout 3 was released for PS3 and Xbox 360 back in fall 2008, picked up rave reviews from critics. PSU was impressed with the game upon release, slapping a mighty 9/10 on the RPG-shooter in our November 2008 verdict.

In addition to its commercial success, Fallout 3 also scooped numerous awards from a variety gaming media outlets, including the Game of the Year gong at the 2009 Golden Joystick Awards. Estimations from the market research firm, Electronic Entertainment Design and Research, put worldwide sales of Fallout 3 at around 12.4 million copies.
