Rumor: PSP2 due out in late 2011

According to a source close to the chaps at VG247, publishers and developers have been informed that Sony intends on unleashing its long-rumored successor to the PlayStation Portable in late 2011.

The unnamed British source was quoted saying, “We’ve been told it’s coming in late 2011,” says the website.

PSP2 rumblings have increased substantially over the past few weeks, with Sony believed to have already begun distributing development kits to major studios, among which includes Mortal Kombat dev Netherrealm Studios.

As reported last week, Sony is apparently prepping a “significant launch window line-up” for the handheld, and it’s already been suggested that the hardware manufacturer has no intention of including 3D support for the platform.

While full specs have yet to be divulged, it is believed the PSP2 will include a forward-facing and backwards-facing camera, and includes both touch-screen and physical control functionality.

If Sony is indeed planning a holiday 2011 release for the new hardware, then it’s highly likely we’ll see a formal reveal for PSP2 at E3 next year. We’ll keep you up to date on any developments.
