Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier has claimed that Avowed 2 could still see the light of day as a small team at Obsidian are continuing to work on the project despite reports that it had been scrapped as part of Xbox’s reset plans.
Speaking in a video on YouTube regarding the mass layoffs at Xbox last week, the journalist said that a “small team” of developers will continue to plug away at the Avowed sequel, with hope that it will be “uncancelled.” The plan is to keep working on Avowed 2 until the new Fallout title is in need of more manpower.
It was actually further along than most people would guess for a sequel to a game that came out last year. So I think their hope is perhaps they’ll get it so close to finish that Xbox will look at it and say ‘Okay, you can finish and release this, it won’t cost that much more to finish it’.
Last week Bloomberg stated in report that Obsidian had scrapped Avowed 2 and were instead shifting focus to a new Fallout game, which is being headed by Josh Sawyer. The article stated that the Avowed sequel was coming along well and was on track for an official reveal next year, before being shelved.
Obsidian Entertainment reportedly lost 25% off its workforce as a result of the job losses at Xbox last week, impacting producers, artists, designers programmers, QA testers and more. 1,600 jobs were cut last week as part of Xbox boss Asha Sharma’s major restructuring plans, with 1,600 layoffs coming in a second over the next year.
