Nick Baker has claimed on the latest XboxEra podcast via an anonymous source that Sony is working on ‘select’ PS3 backwards compatibility, allowing them to be played natively on the PS5.
“Sony is working on select PlayStation 3 backwards compatibility, that’s what I’ve heard,” said Baker. He went on to note that he hasn’t received any additional information on the matter, but speculates that Sony may go down a similar path to Microsoft, in the sense that selective titles will be added to its backwards compatibility lineup over time.
Sony has attracted criticism from PS5 owners for how it handles PS3 titles on the console, as you can only play them via PS Plus Premium as streaming titles. Other games such as PSOne, PSP, and PS2 classics can be downloaded directly to your console to play, but this isn’t the case with PS3 games due to that console’s complicated architecture making it tricky to emulate.

Sony hasn’t announced anything about bringing PS3 backwards compatibility, selective or not, to the PS5, so take this with a huge grain of salt for the time being.
