Mike Morasky, a music designer with developer Valve, has reportedly mentioned the codename for the long-rumoured Half-Life 3 during a panel at the GameSoundCon in Burbank, California recently.
HLX has long been rumoured as the codename for Half-Life 3, and was mentioned by Morasky during the panel when discussing the application of HDR. “In fact, Deadlock has its own version of HDR, HLX has its own version, and so on and so forth,” he said. A number of Valve insiders have claimed that Half-Life 3 is in development at the company, with testers reportedly having been able to play it from start to finish last summer.
“This is the furthest it’s ever been. Period. The game is playable end-to-end, period. It’s never been that far. And they’re optimising it, polishing it. They’re probably content-locked, or if they’re not they’re mechanic-locked,” said insider Tyler McVicker in May last year. Prior to that, in 2021 McVicker had commented that Half-Life 3 was not in the works at the time as Valve was focussing on Steam Deck.
Half-Life 2 was released in 2004 and remains one of the most celebrated video games of all time. Valve supported the game with episode content in the form of Episode One and Episode Two in 2006 and 2007, respectively, and had planned Episode 3 before cancelling the project.
The latest entry in the series is Half-Life Alyx, a VR title that eventually became playable on the PSVR 2 thanks to the release of PC Adapter that allows you to play various Steam VR titles on the device.
