SEGA has confirmed that it is working on a movie adaptation of Yu Suzuki’s classic Out Run game, with both Michael Bay and Sydney Sweeney attached to the project.
According to early reports, Bay is being lined up to direct and produce the Out Run film, while Sweeney is also acting as a producer. The film is currently in the early stages at Universal Pictures, and will feature a script penned by Jayson Rothwell.

Toru Nakahara, who worked on the three Sonic the Hedgehog movies, the Knuckles TV show and the forthcoming Golden Axe animated series, is serving as producer in regards to SEGA’s involvement, and the project will be overseen by Shuji Utsumi, the company’s president and COO.
Out Run launched in September 1986 in Japan and rolled out in the US and EU in November and December, respectively, becoming one of the most popular arcade titles over the era. Suzuki-san is noted for working with a very small team on the project, and did most of the work himself due to having only 10 months to program the game. Out Run is considered one of the most influential video games ever created and went on to become SEGA’s most successful arcade cabinet of the 1980s, with numerous ports following over the years.
SEGA has a number of titles in the pipeline including Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, Shinobi: Art of Vengeance, and Project Century, while also resurrecting franchises including Crazy Taxi, Golden Axe, and Jet Set Radio.
