Yu Suzuki reckons SEGA will “probably” let him rustle up a Shenmue III if given the chance, though noted the reason it hasn’t happend yet is down to one simple thing: budget.
Speaking at GDC this week (via Gamasutra), the legendary developer reiterated his desire to continue the forklift driving, sailor-searching cult classic, and reckons his former bosses at SEGA will give him the green light to do so.
"Well, I want to make it," he commented. "About 200 people will buy it, I think," he quipped, though given the fact a new title in the adventurer hasn’t been seen in almost a decade, we wouldn’t be surprised if it’s slipped off the public’s radar altogether.
"Funding is an issue," he continued. "Probably Sega will let me make it. I think," adding, "It’s simply a problem of budget."
For those who didn’t have the pleasure of playing the Dreamcast classic, Shenmue is a bit like marmite. You either love it, or hate it. The game cost $47 million (not the rumored $70 million, which Suzuki himself took the time to clarify this week) million to produce, and was something of an eye-opener for its time.
The game itself takes place in the late 1980s, and focuses on stoic hero Ryu Hazuki’s quest to avenge the murder of his father by duffing up thugs, chatting with the locals and playing Hang On down the local arcade.
